Survey by JR Cape Management Consulting Group among European expatriates in Asia
What are the expectations of expatriate employees of foreign companies in (South) East Asia? What are the requirements seen by expatriates for the job far away from home, and which specific requirements are set out by their employers? In a survey initiated by us we asked managers working in Greater China, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, India, Singapore, Japan, Korea and Indonesia. The interesting results of the survey - covering managers in all fields of business - can be summarized as follows:
• 94% of the survey participants want to stay and work in Asia in future with certainty or at least with high probability
• 89% would change jobs to another (foreign) employer within Asia, without returning back to their home country first
• For 66% of the surveyed professionals financial aspects are the predominant decision factor for a career change
• Requirements for expatriates have undergone significant changes in the past years, and further changes in terms of professional and personal requirements are foreseen
The results of the JR Cape survey are in some part very surprising and should be carefully considered by companies engaging in international business, especially with regard to Asia Pacific. On the one hand it might not become any easier in future to keep the sent expatriate employees in the own organisation or even repatriate them to Europe. On the other hand the increasing willingness of managers to change jobs while being on an expatriate assignment creates opportunities for companies that look for international and experienced talent in the region, if offering interesting working and financial conditions to win-over such candidates.
